PR, LTVP and LTVP+ for Foreign Spouses in Singapore
Marriage to a Singapore citizen or permanent resident creates eligibility for some sponsored applications, but it does not create automatic residence or PR. The correct route may be an ICA Long-Term Visit Pass, sponsored PR, or a MOM pass tied to the foreign spouse's or sponsor's employment. Each route has different eligibility, renewal, sponsorship and relationship-change rules for affected families.
Government requirements are linked in the official sources below. Preparation suggestions are advisory guidance; individual decisions remain with the relevant authority.
Choose the correct immigration route
A citizen or PR may sponsor a legally married spouse for ICA LTVP or PR. A MOM Dependant's Pass is a separate work-pass facility for eligible EP, S Pass, ONE Pass or EntrePass holders; it is not the spouse pass issued merely because the sponsor is a PR.
PMLA before marriage
The free Pre-Marriage LTVP Assessment is for a Singapore citizen and non-resident intended spouse. It indicates likely LTVP eligibility, but is not a pass or approval. A positive outcome can shorten the later foreign-spouse LTVP processing time if the couple follows ICA's conditions.
LTVP and LTVP+
An LTVP permits an eligible foreign spouse to stay under ICA sponsorship. LTVP+ is for foreign spouses of citizens and gives greater certainty and a longer residence period. ICA may consider a citizen child, pregnancy, marriage duration, financial support and conduct.
Sponsored PR is discretionary
A citizen or PR spouse can sponsor the PR application, but ICA assesses family ties, economic contribution, qualifications, age, family profile, residency, integration and commitment to roots. ICA does not publish a points score or a minimum marriage period guaranteeing PR.
Documents and declarations
The sponsor and applicant should use the live ICA checklist. Typical records include passports, marriage and divorce records, education, employment, payslips and tax documents. Each applicant added to the application must review and make declarations through Singpass or ICA-provided credentials.
Divorce, separation or death
Divorce does not automatically revoke PR. REP renewal is then assessed on the PR's own merits. A pending sponsored application must be updated. LTVP renewal after divorce or widowhood is not automatic; ICA directs people who cannot submit because of unique circumstances to request assistance.
No automatic outcome
Pregnancy, a child, a longer marriage or a working sponsor may be relevant but does not guarantee LTVP+, PR or renewal. Where the published rule does not decide an individual outcome, submit the changed facts through the correct e-Service and obtain an ICA decision.
Common questions
What happens to my PR, a pending sponsored application or my REP if I divorce, separate or my sponsoring spouse dies?
Divorce does not automatically revoke existing PR, and ICA assesses the next REP on your own merits. A widow likewise declares the changed status and applies for REP renewal on their own merits. For a pending PR application, update marital status in MyICA immediately. ICA must decide whether a sponsored application can continue after divorce, separation or death.
Link to answerShould a PR's spouse apply for PR, an LTVP or a DP, and how do LTVP renewals work?
A PR may sponsor a legally married spouse for ICA LTVP or PR. A Dependant's Pass is a separate MOM route for family of an eligible work-pass holder, so PR status alone does not create DP eligibility. Apply to renew an LTVP at least three months before expiry; renewed validity starts on issuance and unused validity is not carried forward.

What is the Pre-Marriage LTVP Assessment (PMLA), and what if it is unsuccessful?
PMLA is a free assessment for a Singapore citizen and intended non-resident spouse. It gives greater clarity on likely LTVP eligibility; marriage itself does not guarantee long-term stay. An unsuccessful result is not an LTVP rejection. ICA says a new PMLA is unnecessary unless information or circumstances change. After legal marriage, an LTVP application is still required for residence.
Link to answerWhat happens to an LTVP or Dependant's Pass after divorce or widowhood?
ICA does not promise automatic continuation of an LTVP after divorce or the sponsor's death. A foreign spouse who cannot submit renewal because of those circumstances should ask ICA for assistance; cancellation can result in a short-term Visit Pass. A MOM Dependant's Pass is tied to its work-pass sponsor, so the employer or sponsor must check MOM's cancellation and alternative-pass rules.
Link to answerWhat affects a foreign spouse's PR chances (marriage length, education, sponsor profile, no local work history)?
ICA considers factors including family ties, economic contribution, qualifications, age, family profile, length of residency, integration and commitment to Singapore. Official statements also identify marriage length and the citizen sponsor's ability to support the family in relevant family cases. ICA publishes no weights, approval odds or rule that local work history is mandatory or irrelevant.
Link to answerCan a boyfriend or girlfriend of a Singaporean be sponsored for PR or a pass?
Not under ICA's spouse categories, which require a legally married spouse. PMLA can be used before marriage by a citizen and intended non-resident spouse, but it is only an assessment and not a pass. An unmarried partner may qualify independently for a work, study or other pass, but the dating relationship itself is not a published sponsored PR or LTVP category.

What is the LTVP, who qualifies, and how do I apply for a spouse?
ICA's Long-Term Visit Pass is available to the spouse of a Singapore citizen or PR and several other listed family or study-related categories. The citizen or PR spouse logs in with Singpass to sponsor the application. The submission fee is S$45; successful applicants pay S$60 for issuance and, where applicable, S$30 for a multiple-journey visa.
Link to answerWhat documents does the citizen or PR sponsor need to provide?
Use the live checklist generated for the application. ICA's published PR checklist covers civil-status records, education and professional records, current employment letter, six months of payslips, and overseas tax records where applicable for the sponsor and other listed persons. ICA may request additional documents, and non-English documents need accepted official translations.

Can family members living overseas be included in my PR application?
Eligible dependants - a spouse or qualifying child - may be added to a PR application through the e-Service. Each added applicant must review and declare the application using Singpass or ICA-provided credentials. ICA does not list overseas residence as a separate disqualification, but every person must meet the relevant relationship and document requirements and is assessed individually.
Link to answerAre marriages of convenience for PR an offence?
Yes. Section 57C of the Immigration Act criminalises a marriage of convenience used to obtain an immigration advantage, and also covers arranging or assisting such a marriage. ICA states that the offence can carry a fine of up to S$10,000, imprisonment of up to 10 years, or both. False statements can create additional offences.
Link to answerWhy are some foreign spouses (e.g. pregnant spouses) granted LTVP+ instead of PR?
LTVP+ and PR are different facilities with separate assessments. ICA says a foreign spouse of a citizen may be eligible for LTVP+ when pregnant or when the marriage has a Singapore citizen child, with marriage duration, financial support and conduct also considered. Those facts do not create automatic PR, and ICA does not publish individual reasons comparing the two outcomes.
Link to answerCan a non-working PR or citizen sponsor a spouse or children for PR?
ICA's eligibility pages allow a citizen or PR to sponsor a spouse and qualifying unmarried child; they do not state a fixed sponsor salary or employment requirement. However, ICA considers economic contribution, family profile and ability to support the family in relevant assessments. A non-working sponsor can submit, but the outcome is case specific and supporting finances should be documented accurately.

The initial profile assessment is free and carries no obligation to proceed. It reviews the application category, document gaps and preparation steps, with a recommendation to apply, complete specific preparation first, or check a different route. It does not predict approval.
