Singapore PR for South Korean Data Scientists
South Korean data scientists in Singapore usually work on an Employment Pass, and data scientist is one of the infocomm roles on MOM's COMPASS Shortage Occupation List. That list has its own degree and job-title tests, separate from anything ICA publishes. A PR file then draws on Korean civil records issued under the Family Relationships Act and Korean degree documents, so the qualification and job history you declared to MOM should read the same way in what you submit to ICA.
Government requirements are linked in the official sources below. Preparation suggestions are advisory guidance; individual decisions remain with the relevant authority.
The SOL degree test names four faculties, not statistics
MOM's Shortage Occupation List guide lets an EP application for a data scientist claim the bonus if the candidate has either a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Programming & Systems Analysis or Science (Computer Studies), or at least three years in the listed titles: chief data scientist, data engineer, data scientist or head of data analytics. A Korean graduate in statistics or industrial engineering may therefore have relied on the experience limb instead. Know which limb your employer used, because the degree and job history in that application are part of your record.
Few Korean degrees can be checked on an MOM-listed portal
MOM's list of verification portals, last updated 20 November 2025, names Inha University as the only South Korean institution and lists no Korean government portal. MOM says the list is not exhaustive, but for most Korean degrees the practical route has been a selected background screening company whose report carries an MOM verification reference number. MOM does not accept notarised copies or school letters as verification proof. Keep the report your employer obtained, since MOM only requires verification once and you may not be asked again until ICA looks at the same degree.
ABEEK accreditation is a Seoul Accord fact, not a Singapore rule
The Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea (ABEEK) has been a Seoul Accord signatory for computing programmes since 2008, according to the Accord's own list. If your computer science degree came from an ABEEK-accredited programme, that is useful context for describing your training. It is not something MOM's SOL guide or ICA refers to, so treat it as supporting detail rather than a qualification that changes how either agency assesses you.
How the SOL bonus interacts with Korean headcount
MOM awards 20 SOL points, or 10 if your nationality makes up one third or more of the employer's PMETs. Separately, the C3 diversity criterion gives 20 points where your nationality is under 5 per cent of PMETs. Nationality here means the passport nationality in Singapore Government records, and PRs are counted. A Korean data scientist in a team with few other Korean nationals may have passed COMPASS on different criteria from a colleague of another nationality. These are MOM work pass rules; ICA does not publish nationality scoring for PR.
Relevant professional records
The current ICA checklist is the starting point. Additional examples should be relevant to your circumstances and permitted by your employer; do not disclose protected information.
- Employer confirmation of your role and employment dates
- Qualification records matching the information in the application
- A non-confidential explanation of your analysis, deployment or research responsibilities
Illustrative preparation example
A data scientist can explain a deployed project at a high level and identify their responsibility. Client datasets, model secrets or unsupported claims about national impact are unnecessary.
Eligibility, assessment and preparation are different
ICA publishes broad factors including family ties to Singaporeans, economic contributions, qualifications, age, family profile and length of residency. We do not present a nationality-specific salary cutoff, waiting period, cohort ranking or approval probability as an ICA rule. Work-pass qualifying salaries and COMPASS are MOM requirements, separate from ICA PR assessment. Use accurate payslip and tax information rather than a supposed PR salary target.
Inconsistencies to resolve before submission
- Employment dates or employer identity that conflict across the form and records
- Salary figures that mix fixed pay and bonuses without explanation
- Qualifications, titles or registration status that are inaccurately described
- Optional evidence that exposes confidential or personal information
Preparation mistakes to avoid
- Treating a job title, salary or employer brand as a guaranteed approval signal
- Adding unverified claims about sector priority or unpublished ICA weights
- Submitting inconsistent records without resolving the discrepancy
- Following an arbitrary waiting period instead of checking the applicable route and current documents
Check before confirming the application
- Identity, qualification and employment details refer to the same person
- Names, dates, addresses and salary figures agree across the records
- Non-English records have translations accepted by ICA
- The applicants included meet the correct category and have reviewed their declarations
Common questions
Can a South Korean data scientist apply for Singapore PR?
Yes, if they fall within an eligible ICA application category. ICA lists Employment Pass and S Pass holders as eligible. Being Korean or working in data science does not by itself establish eligibility, and neither factor determines whether an application is approved.
Link to answerDoes being on the Shortage Occupation List help my PR application?
ICA does not say so. The SOL is part of MOM's COMPASS framework for Employment Pass applications, where it can add bonus points. ICA publishes broad factors such as economic contributions, qualifications and length of residency, not occupation lists. What carries over is consistency: the job title and duties in your EP record should match your employer letter.
Link to answerWhich Korean certificate shows my birth details?
Under Korea's family register law, the certificate translated as the identification certificate records your birth and any loss, acquisition or reinstatement of nationality, while the family relation certificate records parents, spouse and children. ICA does not name Korean documents, so submit the one that shows the fact you are proving, with an official English translation.
Link to answerReview your documents and next steps
The initial profile assessment is free and carries no obligation to proceed. It reviews the application category, document gaps and preparation steps, with a recommendation to apply, complete specific preparation first, or check a different route. It does not predict approval.
